CLBC paddlers make a splash at the State Sprints!

State Sprint Championships

15 and 16 February 2014

Champion Lakes Boating Club competitors wrapped up a full weekend of racing at the Flatwater Sprint Kayaking State Championships yesterday and with a slight tail wind created perfect conditions for personal bests!

Congratulations to all competitors;

Kathy Mallory, Jack Cappendell, Daniel Bowen, James Rutley, Ben Smith, Sam Mctigue, Jared Leach, Caleb Bushby, Gabby Bushby, Harriette Alexis and Emerson Alexis.

They all managed to post personal best times in at least one race and that is a fantastic effort!

Special mention to Jared Leach and Caleb Bushby for posting the EXACT same heat time of 47.94 in the k1 200 (and then Jared went on to miss the final!), Ben Smith for falling in the k11000 because of ‘paddle malfunction’ and Sam Mctigue for collecting a hoard of medals over the weekend in the tough under 18 category.

CLBC paddlers at Peel Paddling Carnival

Mandurah members join paddlers at 2013 Peel Paddling Carnival

Five CLBC members travelled to Mandurah to join the Over 55s group on Monday 2 September for a very  pleasant morning out on the estuary ( and coffee and lunch out afterwards of course!). The sunshine finally came out from the clouds and we set off with approximately 30 paddlers on water that looked like satin- a real treat! Thanks to the Mandurah group for a very well organized outing.

 Sprint Regatta 2 February 2013

We sweltered through very hot and still conditions for the fifth and last regatta before State Champs with everyone enjoying the swim at the end. Our paracanoe-er Kathy Mallory competed in a 200m sprint for the very first time and achieved one of her aims by staying upright and finishing the race! Good on you Kathy!! Great to see everyone out there is in club colours. Stay focused as we start the countdown to States. Good luck everyone!

Monday 6 August 2012

Paddlers: Ben Smith, Caleb and Gabby Bushby, Harriette and Emmerson Alexis, Jamie Drewry, Jack Cappendell, Daniel Bowen, Tristan and Hazel Turner, Ellie Berger, Tom, will and Bec Robinson.

CLBC teams did so well in this year’s Junior Avon . Team Muvfasa of Jack Cappendell, Daniel Bowen and Jamie Drewry came second in a heartstopping finish, losing by 10meters over 15km in the Under 12 guppy category! Tristram and Hazel Turner and Ellie Berger came an equally impressive second in their class and Team Robinson, with 2 of the 3 paddlers having only done 2 previous training sessions, winning their class! Caleb completed the distance in the doubles teams category with another Ascot member Time Feasy and did really well as did Harreiette, Gabby and Emmerson in the Under 10 guppy class. The icing on the cake for the day was for Jack Capependell winning first prize in the lucky draw, an impressive In2kayaks ocean ski!!

Thanks to all the parents who helped with the many jobs on the day and for the on water support for our paddlers.

CLBC Competitors Excel at 2011 Junior Avon Challenge

Champions at Moore River

Six CLBC families enjoyed a great weekend at Moore River on 19 and 20 November. Kids and parents enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of the Willowbrook Caravan Park. Activities include a visit for some to the Gingin Gravity Centre,  others went sandboarding down the dunes, four wheel driving, cricket and a serious game of Nerf warfare with some friends from Ascot Kayak Club.

CLBC was represented by 6 guppy paddlers, one junior and 3 adults with some great results. Daniel Bowen came first in the Guppy Under 12 category, closely followed by Jack Cappendell. Taitiarna brown was third in Division 3.

Jordan Anthony, a CLBC junior, has written a re count of the weekend:

On the weekend we headed off to Moore river for a marathon with the CLBC gang. We stayed at a place called Willowbrook caravan park which is a peaceful, historic property between Moore river and Gingin. We started our weekend with 4wd’ing and a game of beach cricket. Back at camp we played cricket and spotlight with some of the Ascot gang and ended our night with a Italian meal followed by a divine dessert.

The next morning, we had breakfast and headed off to Moore river for the marathon. It was an awesome paddle and the huge sand dune was a lot of fun.
Can’t wait for the next trip so…’BRING IT ON!!’

CLBC celebrates CHOGM in Albany!

A group of 10 kayakers and 10 CLBC rowers descended on Kalgan River Caravan Park at Albany for a fun weekend. We met with Albany Canoeing Club and Albany Rowing Club plus did some great sightseeing. As you can see from the photos the scenery was superb.

Ben Smiths account of the weekend at Kalgan River, 28-30th October 2011

I thought the Albany weekend was very good. On the way down we stopped at a new playground in Kojonup. Tim and Pierre really enjoyed the spinning wheel. The paddle on Saturday morning was a lot of fun and my dad came paddling for the first time. I enjoyed going to the movies on Friday night, playing spotlight and card games on Saturday night and had a lot of fun the whole weekend. I hope we can go away again another time with more people from CLBC.

2011 Junior Avon Challenge

Fourteen CLBC juniors entered this years 2011 Junior Avon Challenge over 15km. With team names, Champions of the Lake, OK Lakers, the Top Hats, Hot Chocolate and Cool Kayakers we new there was going to be some fun and serious competition on the day. It was great to see Ben Smith and Ben Howard getting into the traditional Avon spirit of adding a few props. The Top Hats looked "speccy" boys!

The Under 12 Team, OK Lakers, consisting of Daniel Bowen, Jack Capendell and Caleb Bushby demonstrated their fitness and determination coming in second in a total of 1:30:47:5. Jacks dad, Peter, valiantly kept up the lightning pace the boys set in his duty as a race escort but he qwill probably pay the price in the days to come recovering!

Tayla Dennett put in a great effort to come fourth in the female Ironperson individual event and so too did Alex Palleschi coming 5th.

CLBC parents worked hard on the day as marshalls and as on water escorts for the juniors providing valuable support to our young competitors and creating a great club atmosphere.

Start training hard for next year!

Thanks for the great pics Sue!
